Orlistat starts blocking fat absorption within 24 to 48 hours of your first dose. Weight loss varies by individual, but a realistic goal is to lose about 5% of your initial body weight within the first 12 weeks of treatment when combined with a balanced diet and exercise.
The standard dose is one 120mg capsule taken with water immediately before, during, or up to one hour after each of your three main daily meals. Do not take more than three capsules a day.
Because Orlistat blocks the absorption of some fats, it can also slightly reduce your body's absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E, and K). Our pharmacist may recommend taking a multivitamin supplement at bedtime at least two hours after your last Orlistat dose to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs.
The most common side effects are digestive and are directly linked to the fat being blocked. These include oily spotting on underwear, flatulence with discharge, and loose or fatty stools. These effects are usually mild, occur mostly at the beginning of treatment, and can be easily managed by keeping your dietary fat intake within the recommended limits.
No. Orlistat is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with chronic malabsorption syndrome, or those with severe liver or gallbladder conditions. Our clinical team on Roman Road will perform a thorough screening before recommending treatment.
